ABOUT

The Yi Peng Festival originates from the ancient Lanna culture, meaning the “Full Moon of the Second Month” in the Lanna lunar

The festival highlights include floating krathongs, releasing sky lanterns, and lighting traditional oil lamps (Phang Prateep) across the city with these core beliefs:

Floating Krathongs: To seek forgiveness from the Goddess of Water and let misfortunes drift away.

Releasing Sky Lanterns: To pay reverence to the celestial stupa and symbolize the letting go of negativity.

It is a spiritual celebration where homes are adorned with lanterns to honor guardian deities, while sky lanterns are released as an offering to the sacred Chulamani Chedi in the heavenly realm.

Lighting Oil Lamps: To honor guardian spirits for protection, prosperity, and blessings upon the home.

A Once in a Lifetime Experience

Loy Krathong (Forgiveness)

A ritual to ask forgiveness from the Goddess of Water, release misfortune, and let go of negativity. Krathongs, made from natural materials, are floated on the river on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month.

Lanna Candle Trays (Good Luck)

Phang Prateep is a traditional oil lamp offered to the Triple Gem – the Buddha, the Dhamma, and the Sangha. Lit on the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, it is also associated with dedicating merit to others.

Sky Lantern (Hope)

A symbol of the Yi Peng Festival, released as an offering to the sacred Chulamani Chedi in the heavens. It represents letting go of misfortune and honoring celestial beings and ancestors.
